| Imagine a time when there were no radios, phones, televisions or movie theatres - a time before the printed word without magazines, newspapers or books. How did people entertain themselves? They gathered together and told stories. Oral storytelling is one of the earliest forms of human communication. Stories have been an integral part of our cultural heritage, passed on from generation to generation like treasured family heirlooms. We can do our part to preserve this treasure by listening to stories, by learning them and by passing them on. The tales we
tell
may be as simple and familiar as a child's first day at school, a humorous experience at work, the antics of a pet or a vacation fiasco. Or they may be as elaborate and profound as epics like The Odyssey, Beowolf, the Arabian Nights and the Arthurian legends. Every culture, race and religion has its own rich heritage of stories including folk and fairy tales, yarns, myths and legends. Tales from the past and present, true or imagined, scary, funny, sad or joyful, stories that teach, others that inspire or caution us - the wide world of stories has them all. Stories
are all around us,
just waiting to be heard and told.
