Picture Books

When my children were born, I passed my love of books on to them.  Cuddle up and read time was one of our favorite parts of the day.  I soon discovered that I enjoyed the books as much as they did and so my dream was born.  I was going to be a children’s author!
I wrote my first manuscript and sent it out. Back it came, again and again.  “No more than 1000 words,” one editor suggested. “With picture books, less is more.”  My story was 2800 words.
I sat down to rewrite, revise and cut, cut, cut.  Those word cuts were like a paper cut – every one hurt.  But that is the reality of writing a picture book.

Less is more. Say what needs to be said and make every word sing.  It is a challenging genre. But when you hold your published picture book in your hands, when you see your characters and words brought to life by the talented hands of an illustrator and, especially, when you see the joy your books bring to children, all the blood, sweat and tears are worth it.

I hope that you, too, will enjoy my picture books. – Marilyn
