Sharing Snowy by Marilyn Helmer Illustrated by Kasia Charko Orca Book Publishers,  2008

When I visit schools to talk to children about writing, the question I am most often asked is – where do you get your ideas? When I first started writing, I discovered one great source for story ideas is PETS. For my ninth birthday, the gift I wanted more than anything else was a kitten. Instead of a real live kitten though, my parents gave me a toy one. They didn’t think I was old enough to look after a pet properly. But little did my parents know that I already had a pet cat – well, sort of.

Our neighbours had a cat named Joey. Joey liked to come over and lie in the sun in our backyard. He was a very friendly cat and I loved to play with him. I would pretend that Joey was my cat. I loved Joey very much but in my heart of hearts, I knew that he wasn’t really mine. When I got older, my parents did let me have a cat. In fact, we had several cats.

When I started writing, I found that cats, whether they were my pets or someone else’s, were a great source of story ideas. As you read Sharing Snowy, you’ll see how I used ideas I got from pet cats to create the story.
